False Worship
Between God’s instructions for building the tabernacle (Exo 20-23), and these instructions being carried out (Exo 35-40), here (Exo 32-34), we have a terrible incident of God’s people straying away from Him. While Moses is on Mount Sinai, they break the Covenant by building and worshipping a golden calf (Exo 32). God responds in anger, and 3,000 of them die (Exo 32:28). Moses intercedes for them (Exo 33:1-23), and God renews the Covenant (Exo 34:1-35).
