[Registration closed] Grow in the Word Workshop: How to Read Old Testament Narratives: 1 Samuel

  • Furama City Centre (map)

Thank you for your interest! Our registration has now closed.

What comes to mind when you think of the book of 1 Samuel? Maybe you think of famous stories such as God’s call on the prophet Samuel in the night? Or the showdown between David and Goliath? Maybe 1 Samuel appears to be no more than a collection of unrelated stories of unimportant people and unidentifiable places that are good for children’s bedtime reading, but unhelpful for your personal devotion and sanctification.

But did you know that 1 Samuel is part of a larger storyline of the Bible that speaks of the ascendancy of God’s King? In fact, the story of kingship begins in 1 Samuel and ends only in 2 Kings, which explains why historically, 1 Samuel was known as 1 Kings before it came to bear its present title (yes, I know it's confusing!). The central message of the book is about the anointing of a King after God’s heart, who will become the champion, representative and deliverer of God’s people, and whose rule under God leads to God’s promised blessings. Sounds familiar? 1 Samuel is really a movie trailer that whets our appetite for the King par excellence, Jesus Christ.

In this workshop, we will learn “How to Read the OT Narratives in 1 Samuel”. Each participant will have an opportunity to engage in hands-on practice during facilitated breakout sessions. We will cover knowledge and skills such as:

  • How to locate 1 Samuel in the larger storyline of God’s redemptive history

  • How to read the stories in 1 Samuel in an interconnected manner while tracing the theme of God’s King

  • How to read OT narratives by identifying common elements (E.g., Setting, characters, plot, etc.)

  • How to see Christ in the main characters (E.g., Samuel, Saul, David) and redemptive events of the book

Join us, to gain exposure and confidence in reading and applying the Old Testament Narratives. Sign up with those in your CG (in groups of 8 people or less), so that you can marvel together at how 1 Samuel is far more edifying than simply just a string of bedtime stories! Furthermore, this workshop anticipates our 1 Samuel sermon series and CG series starting in October this year.
